My brother, John Stauffer Potter, took the pre-final draft of his new book to the Tisbury Printer on Martha’s Vineyard the afternoon of January 3, 2014. Laster he went to the hospital for a pain killer for back-ache. His brave, bold heart quit suddenly a few hours later. There was no option for me but to bring out his book.
This work has been a book in itself: me in Texas by email and phone getting to know the Florida diving community who were his friends and colleagues and receiving their feedback on drafts; getting to know and trust John’s Martha’s Vineyard computer guru LC Schraeder with her eagle eye for spelling and grammatical errors; building a wonderful relationship also with Janet Holladay of the Vineyard’s Tisbury Printer; and of course helping his son John 3rd manage grief and learn about the book business, while all the time suffering my own grief.
CreateSpace, publisher of the book, required two copies of the death certificate before they would allow anyone access to John’s account. This unpleasant little document was faxed to them by LC and emailed by me. Eventually they let me in and we could upload his book and cover. Meantime all of us were trying to find Owen Lee, one of John’s diving team (who later went to Cousteau) in Mexico, for permission to use his 1958 DVD of the diving team as a book insert. He had had a stroke, was in California, was not in California, had not had a stroke, girl friend was/was not his girlfriend. Finally one blessed day he and John 3 made contact and he gave permission to use his DVD.
We had a deadline for all this: June 15, the day on which his widow Joanie planned a Celebration of his life in church, a reception at the beach club afterwards, and on Monday, a full naval service complete with Taps. The completed books arrived on June 9th, just in time!
And it has rave reviews.
