LAST NIGHT IN TEXAS AT 10 PM, bright moonlight out the window, I was visiting Shanghai,by Skype at 11 in the morning, this morning, bright sunshine out the window, at the same time. You figure it out. I can’t. But I love it. Magic.
This was a Book Launch for my TEA ON THE GREAT WALL put on by TINA KANAGARATNAM, CEO of ASIAMEDIA in Shanghai. Tina, it happens, is a school friend of my younger daughter, TINA BOTOND. I was pleased to meet my publisher, GRAHAM EARNSHAW of EARNSHAW BOOKS for the first time. This charming man is also a songwriter, a delightful unexpected link.
Among the attendees was a French filmmaker, SEBASTIAN CASSET, who is researching for a documentary on PERE JACQUINOT, a hero of World War II in Shanghai–he rescued thousands of Chinese children orphaned and starving by the Japanese invasion. I know him because he had come across my mother EDNA LEE BOOKER’s book FLIGHT FROM CHINA in which she describes Jacquinot’s intense labor to save the children. Sebastien tracked me down as I was mentioned ion her book.
The audio reception was not very good so we had to cut off the visual connection except at the beginning and end of the program. Have to sprinkle s little more magic next time so that the visual will work better. I was waving my arms around and making points with my hands but no one could see me, alas! or maybe just as well.
