I was honored to be the featured speaker at the Gala Closing Dinner of the #WorldArtDecoCongress in #Shanghai last month. Some 150 participants from as far as Belgium, France, and Australia dined in the Grand Ballroom of the Fairmont Peace Hotel (the #CathayHotel when I attended #SirVictorSassoon’s costume parties for children there in the 1930’s).
I had been asked to relate some of the stories from my new book #TEAONTHEGREATWALL about entertaining in Shanghai when we had a life-in staff of ten who saved us from one crisis after another.
While much has bee destroyed, much of the architecture by the great Art Deco architect #LaszloHudec remains in place after 75 tumultuous years with of course some alterations. From my hotel room (Garden Hotel that used to be the #FrenchClub or #CercleSportifFramcaisdeChanghai–the first floors were kept relatively as they had been, and a 33-floor hotel built over them).– I looked down on the art deco #Lyceum where as a child I had attended movies and concerts.
Great kudos to #TinaKanagaratnam, CEO of #AsiaMediaLtd., and to all organizers of this spectacular week-long event.
